Biopic about Fumilayo Ransome-Kuti set to premiere in Cinema May 17.

Bolanle Austen Peters’ biography “Fumilayo Ransome-Kuti is slated for nationwide cinema release on May 17, 2024. This date was set after the film’s impressive limited premiere in 2023.
The film was first shown at the Silverbird Cinema on Victoria Island, Lagos, for a week, from September 8, 2023, to September 14, 2023.
The Anikulapo-Kuti family responded favourably to this short run, which helped to clear the path for the wider release in 2024.
Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, the mother of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, is shown in the movie as she goes from her historic days as the first female student at Abeokuta Grammar School to her marriage to Israel Ransome-Kuti.
She started the Abeokuta Women’s Union with her husband in an effort to fight injustice.
This resulted in a violent confrontation between the traditional and colonial elites who obstructed justice and equity.
The film’s influence goes beyond the screen thanks to outstanding performances by Kehinde Bankole, Joke Silva, Irenide Adeoye, and Adunni Ade. It was awarded two prestigious prizes at the Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) for Best Screenplay and Best Overall Feature Film.
Although Nollywood produces very few biographical movies or biopics, the film industry has already become widely popular due to its vibrant comedies, dramas and thrillers.
On the other hand, Fumilayo Ransome Kuti’s upcoming wide release demonstrates the increased interest in showcasing the lives of notable Nigerians.
The film “Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti honours a remarkable woman who has perseverance and strength while showcasing the power of cinema.
